Social Responsibility of Science - Popularization of science and promotion of sport

Funding from the Ministry of Education and Science

Project title: Science can be POLLUB!

Agreement number: SONP/SP/546881/2022

Project implementation period: 01.10.2022 - 31.12.2023

Principal Investigator: prof. dr hab. inż. Wojciech Franus

Project value: 577 678,00 PLN

Funds granted for Lublin University of Technology: 519 778,00 PLN

Abstract: The aim of the project is to popularize scientific achievements, the work of scientists, research and development work and the promotion of science, as well as to show in an accessible way the usefulness of scientific knowledge - in the broadly understood society.

The project includes 3 main tasks:

  • Pollub at night - as part of the task, we anticipate a series of activities addressed to the general community consisting in including it in the life of the university, showing "what's inside", what scientists do. The task will be carried out by PL scientists and its students. The task provides for the organization of cyclical evening events (ultimately Friday evening and Saturday) on the PL campus. In total, as part of "POLLUB at night" there will be 12 widely understood "meetings" of academicity with society. Thanks to the events, the community will have the opportunity to explore the issues of everyday life scientifically through interesting workshops. Example topics of meetings: "Segregation as the key to recycling", "The role of plants in air purification" or "Examine the water you drink". The proposed topics will also include "Do buildings go to the doctor? Workshops on diagnostics of building objects", "Do steel structures have elbows and knees?", "I don't litter the Earth" or "Treasure Hunt - 3D scanning, georadar, thermal imaging and metal detector. An event addressed to all age groups of the inhabitants of the region will be the event "Draw with the University of Technology". During the classes, various drawing and painting techniques will be presented, and at the same time, during the outdoor classes, workshop participants will be familiarized with the history of the development of Lublin's architecture.
  • Pollub science - As part of the action, film materials will be developed, where the most outstanding scientists of Poland - about world achievements and young scientists, who are the future of Polish science, will tell us - the society - about their fascinations and discoveries. They will show that their work in the laboratory ends with a solution that we use every day, or it will change the lives of future generations. These activities will focus on two aspects of science - new technologies and information technology and sustainable development. Two extremely dynamically developing fields of science - but not necessarily associated with it. We stereotypically forget that every new technology, virtual reality or care for the climate and sustainable development of cities have their source in science. So we want to show the society that the quality of their everyday life and what it will look like in the future is defined here - in a Polish university closely cooperating with other research centers and representatives of the socio-economic environment. The task provides for the development of 20 approx. 10-15 min. films included in two thematic blocks: 1. Pollub climate-block presenting the role of science - especially that generated in Poland - in the implementation of the sustainable development goals set out in the UN 2030 Agenda (including clean and accessible energy, clean water and sanitation, in the field of climate). The topic will also be the evolution of society's scientific awareness in the context of the usefulness of science in everyday life, which translates into an improvement in the quality of life. 2. Cyber science - a block presenting the social usefulness of modern technical and IT solutions. Miniaturization of technology and personalization in terms of applications, countless possibilities of mobile devices supported by artificial intelligence algorithms, allow solving everyday problems from the simplest - how to find a way to more complex ones, e.g. with the use of applications for chronically ill in medicine.

  • Lessons with Pollub - An activity aimed at high school students, potentially future scientists, to whom we want to show how fascinating science is, usually associated with school routine. We plan to conduct classes in 7 thematic blocks: mathematics, physics, chemistry, architecture, materials engineering, environmental engineering and multimedia. Classes on topics known, seemingly obvious, but aimed at arousing curiosity, demythologizing science as something boring, unnecessary, unprofitable. We want to show the fascinating side of science, which so far young people associate with the ossified school structure. Through classes at the university, we will show what it means to be a scientist and how unlimited possibilities science gives them. Each of the blocks will cover issues presented in a way to arouse the curiosity of a young person, with particular emphasis on presenting a useful aspect of knowledge, often considered by students as useless. Interesting issues are supposed to attract attention and arouse the "spirit of a scientist" in students.
