Architectural Accessibility

The buildings of Lublin University of Technology (18 facilities, including 4 student dormitories) are largely adapted to the needs of persons with mobility disabilities.

Designated and marked parking spaces are available for persons with disabilities. The surroundings of the buildings allow free movement. Entrances generally consist of large glazed doors with handles. Exceptions include:

  • Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture (manual and automatic doors);
  • COE Asppect (automatic doors).

In one building (Cen-Tech), assistance from a staff member may be necessary due to the weight of the entrance door.

Buildings are equipped with lifts or ramps, except where access is ensured through alternative organizational arrangements in the Administration Centre-Cafeteria and Rector’s Office buildings.

Routes leading to lifts and ramps are marked within the building information system and the surrounding area. Full access to all floors is available in 14 buildings, while partial access exists in 4 buildings:

  • Faculty of Management,
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Technical Informatics,
  • Administration Centre
  • Rector’s Office.

Access to rooms (excluding technical rooms) is good in 13 buildings and limited in 5 buildings.

Accessible toilets and bathrooms are available on floors accessible to wheelchair users.

Stairways in 16 buildings are marked with contrasting colours (yellow or black), while work is underway in 2 buildings.

Corridors contain visual information boards and directional signs. In one building (Centre for Innovation and Advanced Technologies - Main Library), markings are also installed on floors using three colours. Additional signage is still required in:

  • part of the Sports Centre,
  • Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture.

Floors are marked with numbers.

The outdoor surroundings of the buildings do not yet have a complete tactile guidance path system made of ribbed and blister paving (TGSI). The system is currently being prepared and gradually implemented.

Entrance zones are free from unnecessary elements that might obstruct movement or visual orientation, such as excessive advertising, information posters or inappropriate lighting.

Corridor flooring is generally slip-resistant, benefiting persons with visual and mobility impairments. Contrasting yellow strips are applied to glazed entrance and internal doors. Staircases are also marked with contrasting colours.

Most buildings contain:

  • tactile maps in entrance halls;
  • tactile signs near key rooms and organizational units;
  • contrasting stair markings;
  • yellow markings on glazed doors;
  • slip-resistant flooring;
  • lighting designed to reduce glare and excessive contrast.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering building includes contrasting guiding strips for persons with visual impairments in its lobby and on the first floor.

Further improvements still required include:

  • installation of external TGSI guidance paths in front of all buildings (ongoing);
  • improved colour contrast between walls, doors and floors in selected buildings, particularly:
    • Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture,
    • parts of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science,
    • upper floors of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Information and Communication Accessibility

Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted in 17 of the University's 18 buildings. Information concerning the building excluded from this provision is provided individually by the University.

The University possesses:

  • six portable induction loop systems located across six faculties for use in lecture halls;
  • portable induction loops available in eight facilities, including dean's offices, the Disability Support Centre and the Main Library.

Information regarding the availability of induction loops is displayed at their points of use.

Polish Sign Language (PJM) interpretation services may be arranged in University buildings upon prior request submitted at least three working days in advance.

The University also employs a staff member proficient in sign language.

A quiet room for persons with special needs is available in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (Room E302).

Additionally, four soundproof booths for persons with special needs are available in three libraries and in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science building.

Comprehensive visual alarm and information systems dedicated to deaf and hard-of-hearing persons have not yet been implemented in some facilities.

Digital Accessibility

The University website complies with the Act of 4 April 2019 on the Digital Accessibility of Websites and Mobile Applications of Public Sector Bodies.

The declaration was prepared on the basis of:

  • self-assessment;
  • an assessment conducted by Open Nexus Sp. z o.o.;
  • the statement issued on 13 May 2022;
  • results obtained through automated digital accessibility verification tools.

Improvement activities are planned to achieve compliance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA across the entire University multi-portal system, comprising 102 active websites.

Standard web browser keyboard shortcuts may be used on the website.

Inaccessible Content

A significant portion of published official documents and templates has already been adapted for use with assistive technologies, including mobile screen readers. Remaining documents are being progressively updated.

Exemptions

Documents published before 23 September 2018 and multimedia content published before 23 September 2020 are exempt from accessibility requirements.

Lublin University of Technology operates a main website with a Public Information Bulletin (BIP). Information within the BIP is accessible to persons with low vision, including the option to increase contrast.

The following shortcomings remain:

  • not all contact forms are fully compatible with mobile screen readers;
  • no Easy-to-Read information about University activities is yet available;
  • no information about University activities is available in Polish Sign Language;
  • some graphics on the new multi-portal lack alternative text descriptions.

In June 2024, a comprehensive expert WCAG 2.1 AA audit of https://pollub.pl was carried out. Recommendations were forwarded to persons responsible for the University's websites. Accessibility improvement activities are ongoing across the entire multi-portal system.

The currently used student service system, eHMS Virtual Dean’s Office Pollub, operating since 20 October 2005, is partially compliant with the Digital Accessibility Act.

The University also uses:

  • eHMS system;
  • nAxiom document workflow system;
  • a multi-portal e-mail system provided by global vendors, including Microsoft.

The University maintains 102 websites operated by individual organizational units under the pollub.pl domain, all based on a unified template.

Mobile Applications

Since autumn 2024, Lublin University of Technology has operated the “Kampus Pollub” (Pollub Campus) mobile application, including a campus map.

The application enables persons requiring support to submit assistance requests, which are immediately made available to registered volunteers.

Accessibility tests conducted using Accessibility Scanner and manual WCAG 2.0 testing confirmed the application's accessibility status.

Digital Accessibility Status of the Mobile Application (6 May 2025)

The mobile application is partially compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA requirements.

Inaccessible Content

  • Some graphic elements do not contain alternative text or descriptions.
  • Certain news items and graphical materials fail to meet the required contrast ratio for normal text.
  • The contrast adjustment function operates only within the main menu.
  • Text content lacks a proper heading structure.
  • Text scaling does not function correctly for all main menu elements.
  • Some links cannot be distinguished from regular text.
  • Users cannot stop the automatic banner rotation.
  • The application is locked in portrait orientation.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Standard keyboard shortcuts can be used within the application.

The University continues efforts to achieve full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance as part of the project:

“Open to Everyone, Accessible for All - Lublin University of Technology, a Barrier-Free University.”
