Abstract: Current trends related to industry 4.0, digital transformation or remote work force the continuous development of many scientific disciplines, including metrology, which as an interdisciplinary science has a very large impact on the national economy. Therefore, creating an appropriate metrology policy, resulting from the adopted long-term strategy of operation, is extremely important. It has been observed that the current trends in the development of modern metrology, due to its interdisciplinarity, are scattered over many areas and therefore are not clearly specified. Therefore, it was considered justified to conduct an analysis of the current state of metrology in Poland and to formulate, on the basis of the prepared diagnosis, strategic directions of its development in the long term. Referring to the aforementioned dispersion of metrology into various areas, it was decided that the most important from the point of view of the national economy should be referred to as applied metrology, i.e. physical, chemical, electrical, medical, industrial, photometry and radiometry, as well as legal metrology. The project defines two closely related tasks. The first concerns the analysis of the current state of metrology in Poland, including the diagnosis of metrological personnel competences in terms of technical and apparatus resources and doctorates, including implementation ones in the field of metrology, allowing to strengthen human resources. Today, a problem that is strongly felt both in industry and in research centers is the lack of specialized metrology staff. The second task focuses on identifying the needs of metrology in Poland and developing a comprehensive and long-term development strategy, especially in terms of the development of the national economy and the observed global trends. The implementation of this task will be an answer to the question "Quo Vadis Metrology?" posed during the National Forum for the Integration of Polish Metrology. As part of the project, experts who conduct scientific research in the above-mentioned areas and a representative of the Central Office of Measures - a unit largely responsible for Polish metrology policy, will be invited to cooperate. The results obtained under the project will help to strengthen metrology in the context of directing further scientific research and will support the national metrology policy. The lack of such an approach may result in its marginalization and underinvestment, which translates into the danger of increasing the distance to highly developed countries. It is also important due to the need to conduct a coherent metrology policy and increase the application possibilities of measurements, especially in the aspect of the next industrial revolution. It is also necessary to mention the need to digitize the industry and increase the speed of processing large data sets, which force a new look at metrology and its development directions. The results of numerous scientific studies show that progress in the field of metrology is the driving force behind the development of the economy, both in terms of improving new and improved products and services. Currently, there is no long-term and universal (nationwide) model forecasting the development directions of Polish metrology. There are only local and scattered partial strategies formulated, for example, in short-term action plans of selected institutions, selectively in the strategies of individual and local research units. Targeting the long-term development of metrology on a national scale and linking it with global trends and industry 5.0 is the key task of the proposed project. Therefore, it was considered fully justified to undertake research aimed at developing strategic directions for the development of Polish metrology in the long term. Survey research and expert opinions will be used to implement the project. The project is implemented under the discipline of mechanical engineering.
