Professor Bogusław Szmygin, dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Lublin University of Technology and the head of the Department of Monument Conservation, has been awarded the title of Honorary Professor of Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture. This dignity is an expression of recognition, among others for initiatives undertaken by Prof. Szmygin for scientific and didactic cooperation between the universities. The title was awarded in November 2023, but due to the war situation in Ukraine, the awarding ceremony took place in January this year at Lublin University of Technology.
Professor Olexandr Kashchenko, dean of the Faculty of Architecture of KNUCA, emphasizes the contribution of the Lublin scientist to the cooperation of both universities.
– Prof. Bogusław Szmygin was the initiator of "double studies" and the supervisor of numerous diploma theses. He was particularly involved in introducing innovative methods in educating Ukrainian students. This is an extremely important issue because in the future these young people will be responsible for rebuilding Ukraine after the destruction caused by the war - says Professor Kashchenko.
As admitted by Prof. Szmygin, the title of honorary professor is a great distinction and a great honor not only for him, but also for the entire team of the Department of Monument Conservation of Lublin University of Technology.
– Cooperation with KNUCA has been going on for over ten years. During this time, among others in cooperation with KNUCA, we managed to create international second-cycle studies in architecture - says the dean.
Students from Ukraine have the opportunity to study both in Ukraine and Poland, where, with the support of UNESCO scholarships, they can prepare diploma theses under the supervision of specialists from both countries, while at the same time expanding their knowledge in the field of area revitalization, modernization of urban spaces and conservation design. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the resulting restrictions, classes are conducted in a hybrid form.
Prof. Szmygin specializes in the protection and conservation of architectural monuments, including: conservation theory, UNESCO World Heritage, revitalization of historic cities, protection of ruins, as well as valuation and management of monuments. Author of over 150 publications, research and educational programs. Member of, among others, the Committee of Urban Planning and Architecture of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Council for the Protection of Monuments.
