On December 1, 2023, rector of Lublin University of Technology, Prof. Zbigniew Pater, and director of the 5th Secondary School named after Maria Skłodowska-Curie, Beata Jezierska, signed a cooperation agreement.
The most important goals of this initiative are: to show high school students other forms of teaching so that they will willingly acquire new knowledge, and to effectively infect them with the bug of studying and continuing their education at Lublin University of Technology.
– At a time when we are struggling with a demographic decline, it is important to us that as many current high school students as possible choose universities in our region. The cooperation will allow us to identify talented students earlier, which may lead to better recruitment of talented students - says Prof. Zbigniew Pater. He reminds that in this year's Perspektywy ranking, 5th Secondary School took a high eighth place in the Lublin Voivodeship.
Beata Jezierska, director of the 5th Secondary School, admits that entering into cooperation with the university is very important, especially for students.
– We provide them with theoretical knowledge, while at the university they have the opportunity to take part in practical classes, either workshops or laboratories. Currently, we have 2 classes with a mathematics-physics or mathematics-IT profile, as well as 2 classes with a mathematics-geography profile, so we mainly focus on classes related to mathematics, physics and geography - says director Jezierska.
The rector draws attention to the rich educational offer of Lublin University of Technology, including 26 fields of first- and second-cycle studies.
Faculty of Environmental Engineering, which wants to encourage high school students to deepen their knowledge in the field of environmental engineering and power engineering, has prepared interesting proposals for them.
– This year, we invited secondary school students to an open house at our faculty and then to a lecture on sustainable energy. The next step in the cooperation will be a series of classes. We have planned workshops for students that will allow them to delve into the secrets of solar energy, discover the colorful world of chemistry and explore the secrets of water - says Dr. Eng. Aneta Czechowska-Kosacka, vice-dean for development of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering of Lublin University of Technology.
