International labor market is a modern necessity

15.01.2024

Whether we want it or not, the international market will come to us anyway - says the vice-president of the Association of Polish Technicians in Great Britain, Teresa Bilińska, MSc. She adds that construction engineers have great prospects for development on the international stage. The president met with students of Lublin University of Technology to share practical tips on how to build a career abroad.

– Mastering professional technical vocabulary, knowledge of international standards, openness to new challenges and a well-prepared CV are the key elements to succeed on the international labor market – says Bilińska.

She has been involved in the largest international projects for 12 years, including Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea and Great Britain. Taking into account her experience, she argues that opening up to the international market is crucial for the professional development of construction engineers.

– There are still too few Poles on the international market, but opening up to the world helps students develop themselves. British and American regulations apply in almost every country, so their knowledge translates into the entire international market - says the president.

Bilińska draws attention to the increase in the number of English-speaking investors in Poland, which makes the ability to communicate in technical English an advantage. Additionally, it is worth having references that confirm your current achievements and professional skills. For employers, especially in an international environment, references are an important tool for assessing candidate's competencies.

Students treat the opportunity to work on the international market as an opportunity to gain valuable experience, but also a chance to participate in projects of global importance.

– I think that such work will open up completely new perspectives for me and show how diverse the approach to construction can be in different parts of the world – says Michał, a third-year student.

Another student – Adam - has a similar opinion. For him, working with experts from different countries would allow him to learn the latest technologies and standards, and, above all, build a network of professional contacts.
