Inauguration at LUT

04.10.2023

Over 7.1 thousand students start the academic year 2023/2024 at Lublin University of Technology. The official inauguration ceremony took place on October 2, 2023 at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

– Closing its 70th anniversary, Lublin University of Technology remains a strong institution, ready for further development. Last year showed that we are at the forefront in many areas, and a leader in patenting. Last year, our scientists obtained as many as 95 patent decisions and reported 175 inventions to the Patent Office - said the Rector, Prof. Zbigniew Pater.

The Rector drew attention to the University's presence in prestigious rankings, such as QS World University Ranking, Research.com, Web of Universities and The World Top 2%. – This is proof of the high quality of scientific research, growing international reputation and effective transfer of knowledge to the economy.

The rector also mentioned cooperation between Lublin University of Technology and other universities, institutions and companies: - We carry out many joint projects within the Association of Lublin Universities. We are part of the Via Carpatia Polytechnic Network named after President Lech Kaczyński. This initiative brings together students and scientists from the Lublin, Bialystok and Rzeszow Universities of Technology. Additionally, an office of the Polish Metrological Union was established at our University, which enables us to cooperate even more and initiate activities in the field of metrology and measurement techniques.

On the threshold of the new academic year, the rector presented his plans: - We would like to start expanding the “Oxford” building as soon as possible. We are also planning to build an IT Tower. This building will significantly improve the quality of IT education and will be the seat of the new Interdepartmental Center for Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence. The investment is estimated at PLN 100 million. We also intend to open two new fields: technical IT and cybersecurity.

At the end of the speech, the Rector thanked the entire academic community for their huge contribution to the development of LUT, their everyday work, and appealed: - Let's be open to each other and focus on cooperation, let's emphasize what unites us, let's look for wise solutions.

Traditionally, the most important point of the ceremony was matriculation, i.e. the inclusion of new people into the academic community. Students and participants of doctoral schools who achieved the best results in the recruitment procedure took an oath.

Welcoming students and doctoral students, especially the newly admitted ones, the Rector said: - Studies give you tools to discover secrets. Access to knowledge, experienced lecturers and colleagues from various backgrounds creates a unique atmosphere. May this enchantment with science accompany you on your academic journey and for the rest of your life.

Prof. Przemysław Czarnek, Minister of Education and Science, thanked the university employees for not keeping their impressive achievements within the walls of the university. – You really share them. And you share them with other Lublin universities. There are two pieces of evidence. The Lublin Digital Union is a project that was created thanks to you. Its leader is the Medical University of Lublin, but without your contribution, knowledge, experience and organizational efficiency, the Lublin Digital Union would not function. We will be happy to continue supporting this project. The second proof is the excellent Via Carpatia project, which connects three technical universities, brings together students and scientists and raises this cooperation to a high level.

Minister Przemysław Czarnek also assured of further support for Lublin University of Technology. – We know about the needs of the university and we are happy to meet these needs. Today is the next step in their implementation.

Artur Soboń, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Finance, who was present at the ceremony, noted that it was a great honor for him to be in a place where not only an important part of the world of science is created, but also a significant contribution to the economy of Lublin and the region. The Minister announced another initiative that will be the foundation for the development of IT companies and cybersecurity.

The ceremony ended with an inaugural lecture entitled "How to sell the results of scientific research, i.e. how to write articles", which was delivered by Professor Tomasz Kapitaniak, Doctor Honoris Causa of Lublin University of Technology.
