"Unissued Diplomas" is the title of a global exhibition presenting the stories of 40 Ukrainian students who did not complete their studies because their lives were taken by the Russian aggression. The exhibition will be open until March 1, 2024, in the hall of the Center for Innovation and Advanced Technologies of Lublin University of Technology.
Dmytro Kostiuchenko studies computer science at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He found out about the exhibition a year ago and decided to show it at Lublin University of Technology.
– For us, Ukrainian students studying abroad, this is an extremely important project. We want to remind the world about the ongoing war and honor the memory of those students who gave their lives for their homeland. We are creating this exhibition with deep respect for our colleagues who died. They also had dreams and plans, just like we do now. But the chances of achieving them were irretrievably lost. That is why it is so important that we do not forget about their sacrifice and that we remember them as those who fought for our freedom - says Dmytro Kostiuchenko.
Among the people commemorated at the exhibition is Olha, who dreamed of opening her own hotel. Her life was cut short by a tragic missile attack while she was returning home. Another hero whose story is presented is a 22-year-old Journalism student, Oleksandr. He was a driver of a patrol battalion on the front line and died while performing his duty during a tactical operation to defend Mariupol. Hennadiy, an 18-year-old Transport student, had a dream to follow in his father's footsteps and become a mechanic. His life was cut short by shooting by Russian soldiers while he was traveling in a car. Dmytro studied in Kiev and was an instructor at camps. He died in the fighting in Kharkov. He was posthumously awarded the Medal "For Courage" by the President of Ukraine.
– These stories are a sad example of how many promising lives were brutally interrupted as a result of the war. The dramatic fate of the exhibition heroes painfully reminds us of the merciless reality of war, which leaves behind empty spaces and unfulfilled dreams - notes the rector, Prof. Zbigniew Pater.
According to the rector, it is extremely important that we do not forget about those who died in combat, about their dreams and aspirations. Their lives and sacrifices should be a constant reminder to us of the tragic consequences of war.
Elżbieta was one of the people who visited the exhibition: – I am deeply moved. Every photo, every story reminds me of the tragic consequences of the Russian aggression against Ukraine. This cannot be forgotten.
For Magdalena, the exhibition is also an important reminder of the reality of war and the human tragedies that lie behind it: – I am grateful for the opportunity to see this exhibition. It's a huge experience. Hearing about the war and seeing the faces of the killed students changes the way you think.
The exhibition has already been presented in over 110 places around the world, including Japan, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Denmark, Ireland, Norway, USA and India.
Currently, students from Ukraine constitute 10% of all students of Lublin University of Technology. As noted by the rector, Prof. Zbigniew Pater, the university has been supporting war-torn Ukraine in various forms since the beginning of the armed conflict. The "Unissued Diplomas" exhibition is another expression of LUT's solidarity with fighting Ukraine.
